Workshop Description:

When students leave this class, they will have a whole stack of rings; in fact, 5 new rings. Students will be creating a series of rings in a variety of designs.  Some will have patterning on the band, some will have settings for stones, and one will have a silver flower (which students will make) attached. The rings are designed to complement each other and can be worn as a stack of 5 or single ring at a time or any combination.
Students will learn how to: solder, file, and pattern silver using hammers and chisels; twitting and braiding silver; setting a pre-notched finding with a faceted stone and bezel setting a cabochon; sizing and measuring wire to make a band and finally polishing the rings by hand.

Details of kit/workshop materials:

1 faceted gem from a selection of amethyst, blue topaz, citrine or garnet. A cabochon from a selection of complimentary stones such as turquoise, lapis or garnet. A selection of silver wire to create the rings, settings for the stones, silver for the flower and a small pearl for the centre of the flower.  Solder and flux, a set of finishing papers and a polish cloth will be provided.

Torches, ring mandrels, hammers, drill, soldering stations, jeweller’s saw and blades, files and pliers will be provided.

3.5 hours

None

Special Workshop Conditions:

Students will be using a torch for soldering.

Students to Bring:

Magnification if needed. Optional but not necessary: pliers (round and flat), jeweller’s saw and blades, files.
